Ethel W. Greene

In the early hours of Friday, November 21st, Ethel W. Greene passed away in the comfort of her home in Fairfax, South Carolina. She was a mere month from her 97th birthday. Ethel was born in Salem, Missouri in 1928, one of five children to her parents John Carson Walker and Stella Major Walker. When she was 18, Ethel came to South Carolina with her sister Lois where she met Joe Tyler Greene. They wed in 1950 and were married 53 years upon his passing in 2003. Ethel was generous to all who knew her. Without question, she would step in and help those around her in a time of need. Ethel was selfless. Not only was she willing to help financially, Ethel also lended her time. Throughout her life, she helped watch and raise many children. Even into her 90s, Ethel could be seen toting around great grandchildren while also doing yard work. Until her final days, Ethel was a pillar of health. She had battled along side her husband through his many health struggles as well as with her own children. Through loss and heartbreak, she remained steadfast. Her resilience to overcome devastation with grace and poise spread strength to those close to her. Ethel loved her family with a deep, unwavering love. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with each and every one of them. Ethel was predeceased by her parents and siblings as well as her beloved husband, Joe Tyler Greene, her daughters, Cathy Rhodes and Beth Ervin, and her grandson, Jeremy (J.D.) Ervin. She leaves behind a daughter, Nancy Brown and son, Jeff Greene. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Gabriel (Jennifer) Brown, Jordan (Kristin) Brown, Sara Jo Brown, Zachary Brown, Tyler Rhodes, DeeAnna Ervin, John Brown, Casey Rhodes, Jesse Brown, Nathan Greene, Josh Greene, and Benjamin Greene. Ethel is also survived by many great grandchildren, nephews, and a niece. A celebration of Ethel’s life will be held Sunday, November 30th, at 3 p.m. at Posey Funeral Directors. The family will be receiving friends at 2 p.m., an hour prior to service. “Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:6-8.
