Gene Autry "Aut" Wood Jr.

Waynesville, NC- Funeral Services for Gene Autry “Aut” Wood, Jr., 59, who entered into rest March 21, 2024, will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel, Dr. Paul W. Noe officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Gene was born August 13, 1964, in Orangeburg, SC to the late Gene Autry and Bronell Driggers Wood, where he grew up and lived for many years. He had made Waynesville, NC his residence for the past eight years. Gene was a Service Technician for Ledbetter Heating and Air for over 20 years where he served the Waynesville, Canton and Ashville areas and was beloved by his customers. He enjoyed keeping his mind and hands busy by tinkering with odds and ends around his home, building projects fixing cars, or prepping his “Doomsday” stockpile. Gene loved all genres of music and watching movies. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially, taking his grandchildren, Chase, Jared, and Julianne to Jelly Belly’s Candy Shop or taking his nephew, Hunter to Waffle House and teaching him to love music as much as he did. Gene will be remembered for being a true, kind, and salt of the earth gentleman. He was known for his heart of gold, always willing to help others before himself. Gene was the king of procrastination and a jokester. He always told his family to “Drive Safe and I love you.” He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Surviving members left to cherish his memory include his wife of 4 years, Brenda Byars Wood; a daughter, Elizabeth Norton (Kevin) McCarthy; three grandchildren, Chase Harper, Jared Harper, and Julianne Harper; two sisters, Natalie (David) Sasser and Wanda Kay (Joe) Carney; a niece, Savana Grace Carney; a nephew, Hunter Wood; and his beloved fur babies, Bella and May. Pallbearers will be Jared Harper, Hunter Wood, Chase Harper, David Sasser, Kevin McCarthy, and Gene McCarthy. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, www.donate.cancer.org or Enhabit Hospice, 2743 Perimeter Parkway, Building 100, Ste 100, Augusta, GA 30909. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Enhabit Hospice, especially, Jordan, Linda, and Lou Cindy for their compassionate and loving care for Mr. Wood.
