Gerald Timothy (Tim) Jannik Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Son-in-Law, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Friend and Loving Grandfafa We’ve lost Tim Jannik, a giant of a man—literally and figuratively—admired, respected, and beloved by friends, colleagues, and family alike. Tim left us far too soon, and though we mourn this tragic loss, we take solace in the fact that he died while pursuing one of his passions in life—rowing on the Savannah River. A brilliant scientist, an elite athlete, a trusted friend, a mentor to co-workers—yes, he was all of those. But above all, Tim was a superb role model as a husband, father, and grandfather; a calm and steady guiding hand for his many family members, whom he loved dearly, and who adored him in return. His presence, his influence, and his highly positive impacts on the lives of those he touched in his personal, working, and rowing lives are perhaps best captured in some of the words from the dozens of heartfelt tributes that have poured in since news of his passing began to spread: Loving . . . generous with time and talents . . . thoughtful, giving, strong . . . paved the way for others so they could succeed . . . contemplative, dedicated, compassionate . . . attentive . . . loyal . . . gentle spirit . . . such a great loss here and a huge gain in heaven . . . appreciated the simple things . . . hardworking . . . patient, grateful, refined . . . warm, funny, reliable, and Scrabble genius . . . logical, witty, dependable . . . quietly assertive, dedicated, kind . . . disciplined . . . witty, wise, wondrous . . . faithful, humble . . . quiet strength and calmness that made you feel safe and secure . . . genuine . . . conscientious . . . competitive (very quietly) . . . consistent . . . always set example for others . . . stoic, kindhearted . . . a man of few, yet powerful words, encouraging and patient . . . avid sports fan who knew the rules of every game . . . relentless in completing what he began . . . calm and positive presence . . . my coach, my mentor, my friend, beacon in my life . . . unwavering . . . a program builder and teacher, makes people around him better . . . a force . . . excellent boat trailer driver . . . quiet, wine, and mustache . . . such a special person . . . closet snacker and secret ice cream spooner. . . amazing human being . . . miss his great story-telling . . . in my prayers . . . an amazing and passionate advocate for health and the environment--what a loss . . . truly huge loss from so many perspectives, cornerstone, leaves a huge void . . . the science brains behind improving our program, all-around class act, technically strong, organized, efficient, productive, sense of humor was just icing . . . such fond memories of working with Tim, so willing to help . . . concise . . . incredibly smart, very friendly, proud of his family, extremely family-oriented . . . . His Father-in-Law, Harry, who enjoyed learning all the rules of sports, including curling, from Tim. …. And many other family, friends, colleagues, and fellow rowers. Tim was predeceased by his loving parents, Joseph and Olga Jannik; his loving mother-in-law, Elaine; his oldest brother, John Jannik; his sisters-in-law, Nina Jannik and Judy Jannik; and some of his beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. May they all rest in peace together. Tim was involved in so many projects. The latest endeavor was a bathroom remodel with youngest son Joey, and when Donna mentioned that she thought Tim might not be too pleased to have been unable to see it to completion, Joey remarked, “Well, this is our test to see how much we learned from him.” No truer words can be said . . . we will be tested—and hopefully make Tim proud of all of us. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Augusta Rowing Club, 101 Riverfront Drive, Augusta, GA 30901. Tim was a prolific leader in environmental health physics—and a mentor to many. A scholarship is being established in his name to honor his wide-ranging contributions to the profession. Details on the scholarship are expected to be announced later this year.
