Horace Day

Horace Day, Jr., 89, went to his heavenly home to join his Lord and Savior and beloved late wife, Evelyn, early Sunday morning, Feb. 4, 2018. Mr. Day was a life long resident of Aiken County, having lived in Beech Island for over 77 years. He was born on May 4, 1928 in Eureka, SC to Horace Day Sr. and Lizzie Gibson Day. As one of 10 children born to sharecroppers, he left school at an early age to work on various farms with his family. From this meager beginning, Horace became a carpenter and later a well-respected, meticulous craftsman in the brick and stone masonry trade. Horace and Evelyn were married for 65 years. They enjoyed family vacations in the Great Smokies, camping at Clarks Hill, beach trips to Edisto and lots of pond fishing. After retirement, they spent many Saturdays shopping and selling goods at Springfield and Anderson, SC and The Barnyard in Augusta. Mr. Day was an honest, humble, hard-working Christian man of few words. He loved his Lord, his family and the many friends he made throughout the years. He enjoyed the simple things in life, gardening, tinkering on a project, porch sitting, family gatherings or just talking about the "old days". Horace was a former member of both the First and Second Baptist Churches in Beech Island. In the early eighties, he and other brethren of Second Baptist helped build the first sanctuary. Over the last few years, he rarely missed the televised Sunday morning services of Warren Baptist. During his last year of life, the highlight of his weekday mornings was having breakfast and seeing his new friends at Crossroads Café. In addition to Evelyn, Mr. Day was predeceased by 5 brothers, 2 sisters and his cherished granddaughter, Jessica Day Murphy. He is survived by one son, Clint Day (Judy), 2 daughters, Mandy Horn (Monte) and Lisa Cummings. Also left to cherish memories of Horace are two grandsons, Cody and Adam Cummings, two precious great-granddaughters, Aina and Lilly Cummings and two sisters, Sylvia Price and Betty Mabrey. The family would like to thank Dr. William Neumann and Dr. William Wylie for the excellent care they provided our father for over 20 years. We also want to thank family and friends who have sent cards, offered love, condolences and emotional support since the passing of our sweet, loving father. A very special thank you to Frank Adams for being a confidante and friend to our dad over the last 8 years. A memorial service to celebrate Horace's life will be held in the Posey Funeral Chapel on May 5, at 4PM. We will always love and miss you, Daddy.
