Sarah Anne Kelly Smith

North Augusta, SC—Mrs. Sarah Anne Kelly Smith, 87, went to heaven on December 16, 2013, surrounded by her family, and is now with her Lord. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta. Dr. George W. Robertson and Dr. Raymond C. Ortlund will officiate. Interment will precede the funeral at 12:30 at the River Pointe Family Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in Augusta on November 10, 1926, to the late Alexander Rennie and Ada McNeill Kelly, but has made North Augusta her home for the past 24 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta and the Trinity Bible Class. Mrs. Smith graduated from Tubman High School in 1943 as Valedictorian and earned a degree in physics from Agnes Scott College. She married John Scurry Smith on December 15, 1950, in Augusta. They were married for over 56 years before his death in 2007. She was active on the board of Child Evangelism Fellowship and with the Christian Women’s Club. Over the years Mrs. Smith taught numerous Bible studies and was active in various church activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Scurry Smith, Sr.; three brothers, Dr. Alexander Rennie Kelly, of Bethesda, MD, Dr. Gordon McNeill Kelly, of Augusta, GA, and Dr. Thomas Glenn Kelly, of Jasper, AL. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, B. Roy and Joyce Smith and John S. Jr., and Allison Smith, all of North Augusta; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Ashley Royal of Macon, GA, Anne and Byron Morris, and Emily and Robert Abernathy, all of North Augusta; a brother, Dr. Gene McKenzie Kelly and his wife, Janet, of Macon; sisters-in-law, Mary Kelly, of Augusta and Loren Kelly, of Jasper; twenty-two grandchildren, Sarah Smith (fiancé Brice Doolittle), Rachel Smith, Roy Smith, Jr., Josiah Smith, Ashley Royal, Jr., Carson Royal (Kate), Lauren DeGeorge (Steven), Austin Royal (Anna Caroline), Caroline Royal, Joshua Morris (Susan), Byron Morris, Jr. (Lauren), Caleb Morris (Amber), Joseph Morris, Rebecca Morris, Hannah Scogin (Kirk), Ben Smith (Libby), Daniel Smith (Jessica), Nathan Smith, Elizabeth Daniel, Margaret Daniel, Alexander Daniel, and Andrew Daniel; sixteen great-grandchildren, Matthew, Taylor, McNeill, and Levi Morris; Creed, Abe, and Shield Scogin; Holden, Tucker, and Charlie Royal; Steve-O and Jack DeGeorge; Emma and Byron, III, Morris; Ames Morris. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Trinity Bible Class. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 5 until 8. Mrs. Smith was a faithful, loving, and wise mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who served her family well with a sacrificial and merciful love.
