Shelby Jean Hitt Swanson

North Augusta, SC- Funeral Services for Shelby Jean Hitt Swanson, 85, who entered into rest December 4, 2025, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the First Christian Church of Belvedere with Pastor Ron Allen and Rev. Chris Brown officiating. Interment in the Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the service. Mrs. Swanson – known to many as Nana- was born in Augusta, Georgia on March 12, 1940, to the late Bennie Sherman and Jessie Catherine Readdy Hitt. She lived in the Panama Canal Zone for a brief time before making North Augusta, SC her home for the past 50 years. Mrs. Swanson was a member of the First Christan Church of Belvedere. She enjoyed baking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Swanson was known for her unassuming, dry sense of humor and insightful wisdom. Many of her daughter’s (Shannon) friends referred to her as their “Steel Magnolia.” She will be remembered as devout wife, loving mother and doting grandmother. Mrs. Swanson is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Marion Lamar “Swede” Swanson. Surviving members of the family left to cherish her memory include her three daughters, Lisa Michelle Swanson, Shannon Kaye Swanson and Susan Diane (Brent) Zachow; four grandchildren, Samantha (Ally Rose) Sheehan, James Collin Davison, Benjamin Chandler Roberts and Lauren Nicole Zachow; seven great-grandchildren, James Fletcher Davison, Matthew Fisher Davison, Sophie Ryan Davison, Jaycee Lane Davison, Anthony Riggs Davison, Eris Zelda Sheehan and Beckett Cole Roberts; a special cousin and best friend, Joyce Traylor; and several other cousins. The family extends thanks to Tersea Condrey and Debroah Kirkland for their unwavering devotion, compassion, and tireless care, which allowed Mrs. Swanson to continue to live with dignity and comfort in her own home. The family is eternally grateful to longtime family friend Tina Bell, of Candler, NC for dropping everything and being here with our family during this incredibly difficult time. Tina’s being here handling the really hard things allowed us to give our Mama all our love and attention in her last days. Finally, we thank Enhabit Hospice Care.
