Edwin M. Sheats Jr.

Augusta, GA - Memorial Services for Mr. Edwin M. Sheats, Jr., 77, who entered into rest January 28, 2023, will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock from the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Augusta. Dr. Will Dyer officiating. Interment in the Memorial Gardens of First Baptist Church of Augusta. The family will receive friends following the service. Born March 3, 1945, in Savannah, Georgia, Ed was the son of the late Edwin M. Sheats, Sr. and the late Olivia McLellan Sheats. He grew up in Macon, Georgia. His father was a pharmacist and his mother was a homemaker. He attended high school at Lanier Senior High School for Boys in Macon and later received an Associate Degree in Industrial Engineering from Southern Technical Institute in Marietta, Georgia. He attended Augusta College, and graduated with a BBA Degree in Business Administration, and later attended Georgia State University and graduated with an MBA Degree in Management. He worked in healthcare his entire career. Ed was an Industrial Engineering Technician at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon and subsequently moved to Augusta and joined the long-range planning staff of the Medical College of Georgia. He was a Research Scientist at Georgia Tech's Health Systems, Research Center for several years, a consultant to Georgia hospitals for eight years, and later was employed for twenty years by University Hospital in Augusta serving as Director of Management Engineering, Assistant Administrator for Outreach Services, and Vice President of Corporate Resources. He served in the Army Reserve for seven years as a member of the 382nd Field Hospital unit in Augusta and the 3297th 1000 Bed General Hospital unit in Atlanta. Ed was a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta. Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Johnnie F. Sheats; a sister Beverly (Sheats) Tarpley and her husband Robert Tarpley of Maricopa, Arizona; a daughter Lanie (Sheats) Van Wie and her husband Bill Van Wie of Athens, Georgia; a stepson Kenneth Puett and his wife Joyce Puett of Anderson, South Carolina; and a stepson John Puett of Charleston, South Carolina. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Kaitlin Van Wie, Elizabeth Puett, Catherine Puett, Will Puett, Samantha Puett, and Caroline Puett; three great-grandchildren: Penelope Hollis Wall, Charles Starr Wall, and Lillian Grace Leach. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Faith, Love, and Hope Sunday School Class.
