Mrs. Elizabeth S. Thompson North Augusta, SC—Funeral Services for Mrs. Elizabeth “ Betty” Singletary Thompson, 81, of West Woodlawn Avenue, North Augusta, SC, who entered into rest June 6, 2011, will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from the Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr., Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr. and Dr. T. Joseph Lusk officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Park. Mrs. Thompson was born on August 10, 1929, in Jacksonville, Florida, the daughter of Robert Harvey Singletary and Dee Hendry Singletary. Betty became a resident of North Augusta in 1943 and graduated from North Augusta High School in 1947. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Winthrop College in 1951, and she then returned to the North Augusta school system, this time to teach. She taught primarily third grade at North Augusta Elementary School for 23 years until her retirement in 1990. During her teaching career, she furthered her education at Florida Southern College and the University of South Carolina. Even while teaching, studying, and caring for her family, Betty donated time and energy to making the North Augusta community an even better place to live. She was a leader in numerous local organizations. Having been a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1943, Betty was active in the United Methodist Women; in 1967, she was honored by the UMW with a Special Membership in recognition of her service. Betty was an active member of the Martintown Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent of the chapter as well as holding other offices at the local level. She also served as SCSDAR State Registrar. She was a former member of North Augusta’s Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary organization for women educators, which she served as Charter President as well as in other offices. She served on the Board of the Nancy Carson Library Foundation and on the North Augusta High School Foundation Board. Betty was a member of the Augusta Genealogical Society and of the Taylor County, Florida, Historical Society. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Henry Harold Thompson; daughter Joni-Dee Thompson Ross and her husband David of Summerfield, NC; son David Harold Thompson and his wife Lisa of North Augusta; grandsons Craig Ross, Stuart Thompson, and Derek Thompson of North Augusta; and granddaughter Lindsey-Dee Ross and great granddaughter Kamaya-Dee Janna Vincent of Summerfield. Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Hendry Singletary. Pallbearers will be Craig David Ross, Stuart David Thompson, Derek Mitchell Thompson, Wayne Donald Matthews, Gary Ward Ross, and Joseph Augeri. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Wednesday evening from 6 until 8.
