North Augusta, SC—Funeral Services for Lieutenant Colonel Robert David Sweeney, Jr., U.S. Army, Retired, 84, who entered into rest March 29, 2026, will be conducted Saturday morning, April 18 at 11 o’clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel, Rev. Lance Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors at a later date. The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 17 from 5 until 7. Bob was born on February 12, 1942, in Oglethorpe, Georgia, the son of Robert D. Sweeney and Mildred Rose Sweeney. He grew up as an “Army Brat” during his father’s military career. Over the years he lived in Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, West Point, New York, Wisconsin, California, New Jersey, Georgia, Japan, Taiwan, Viet Nam and Germany. Bob graduated from Morrison Academy High School in Taichung, Taiwan, in 1961 and shortly thereafter entered the United States Army. In March 1963, he was commissioned as an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant. After completing Airborne and Ranger training Bob was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in Ft. Benning, Georgia. In August 1965, Bob was transferred to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Viet Nam where he served as platoon leader and company executive officer. After completing his tour of duty in Viet Nam, Bob had several other assignments before being assigned to the Defense Communications Agency in Stuttgart, Germany. He served in the Army for 24 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Signal Corps. After Army retirement he worked for a Defense Contractor in Stuttgart preparing communications plans for Headquarters European Command for six years. During his career in the Army he received numerous awards and commendations which included: Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Viet Nam Service Medal, Vietnam National Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Bob graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in business administration and held a master’s degree in communications from the University of Southern California. In 1990 Bob and Barbara returned to the United States and made Atlanta, Georgia their home for the next 17 years. While in Atlanta they enjoyed establishing and running Estate of Mind Antiques for 12 years; and in 2008 moved to the home they built on the river in North Augusta, South Carolina. Bob was an avid skier and golfer. While in Germany he served as the President of his community’s ski club and was as a ski patrol leader in the National Ski Patrol for several years. After moving to North Augusta, he played golf several days a week and was a member of the golfing group affectionately known as the “Geezers.” He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Ouzts Sweeney; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Scott de Marrais; son, Robert David Sweeney, III; granddaughters, Ashley and Janet de Marrais.; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bill Skytta.
